Firstly, foremost, and before all things:
One of the greatest, most extraspecially talented and gifted hip hop producers to every be. You are so appreciated and missed and I don’t have a good enough grasp of the English language to communicate that more poigantly. Your legacy will live on and enrich. Trust.
Also, big up to DJ Enuff for taking time out of his set Tuesday on Hot97 to play a few Dilla tracks in honour of the man. Good looking out.
Secondly, welcome—re-welcome to the Garden. As all things progressive we’re growing and changing and swelling and overflowing with things to do and say and be and we hope you hang out and become a part. While we get all sorted out and moved in, we’d like you to take note of a few things.
This Week
Oh, My Blog! Yes! Oh, My Blog!
Occasionally.
Like for example:
- Kay needs to leave his cell phone on and clear out his voice mail! Hi Kay!
- Chip needs to hit me off with some of his new music so we can update his myspace page which I so cleverly just linked.
- Ali Shaheed Muhammad will be participating in the US-Islamic World Forum where he will be a part of the The Arts and Cultural Leaders’ Session in Doha, Qatar.
The U.S.-Islamic World Forum seeks to serve as both a convening body and a catalyst for positive action on one of the greatest challenges in global politics today, the dangerous tension growing between the United States and the world’s Muslim states and communities. Therefore, our focus is not on dialogue for dialogue’s sake, but on developing actionable programs for government, civil society, and the private sector.
This unique endeavor will bring together American and Muslim world figures from such fields as literature, visual arts, music, television and media. This gathering of leaders will explore such areas as the interplay between arts/pop culture and politics, and the role of the artist in the public sphere.

This week?
- Some buddies of mine from back in Texas, The Legendary K.O., who(m?) you might remember from a few months ago for their track “George Bush Doesn’t Like Black People” over Kanye’s “Gold Digger” instrumental. This song is off their album 48 Seasons, and features our man Kay tryin’ to make ends meet.
- Garden Seeker affiliate and seasoned H-Town beatsmith, The ARE and our boy Kay have formed a group, and have prepped a 12″ and subsequent LP to drop this spring. The group is called Together Brothers, and they make dope music together in my not so humble opinion. Their first single, “Get That” b/w “Y U Wanna” features MED on the A Side and UK Scratch Champ DJ Skully on cuts on the B Side. There’s also a crazy remix of the A Side on the B side I think, that I happen to like ever so sliiiiightly better than the original.
Isn’t that great though? When remixes do what they s’posed ta? Be just as good or better than the original mix? Sick of that just throw a few extra 16s on a joint and call it a remix. No, that’s just a longer more annoying version of the same damn song! Mary J. Blige raps now? Who knew?
- One of my favourite songs of Shaheedullah and Stereotypes was “All Night” w/ Wallace Gary. So much in fact I asked Ali if I could give it away on Rappers I Know a few months ago. You can cop that again here if you missed it last time around or haven’t copped the record yet.
